In the Czech Republic, 2G is still up and running for now. However, the Czech Telecommunication Office (CTU) has required operators to keep 2G networks running until at least 30 June 2028, or until the share of users of this technology falls below 5%. The exact date for switching off individual networks has not yet been announced, but the direction is clear – older 2G technology will be gradually phased out in favour of more modern 4G LTE and 5G networks.

Where has 2G already been switched off?

Some countries have already shut down their old 2G networks completely:

• Switzerland – phased shutdown completed between 2021 and 2023
• Singapore – switched off back in 2017
• South Korea – end of 2G in 2021

Other countries plan to switch off or significantly restrict 2G over the next few years:

• France – shutdown starting in 2026
• Sweden – phased shutdown by 2027
• Netherlands – planned switch-off by 2027
• Germany – phased shutdown of 2G networks by 2028
